Both digital and analog functions.
ANALOG
A watch with hour and minute hands 2-Eye + Moon: Analog + (day + date eyes at 3 and 9 position) + AM/PM moons.
ATM
Atmospheric pressure referring to water resistance (1 ATM is equal to 33 feet)
BEZEL
Top part of a case that may be integrated into the case or a separate element; can be stationary or rotating
CASE
The housing for the movement, dial and crystal
CHRONOGRAPH
A watch that includes a built-in stopwatch function 2-Eye chronograph with date: Analog + a minute totalizer eye + small second eye + date window (eyes are at 3-9) 3-Eye chronograph: Analog + second totalizer eye, minute totalizer eye, and 24 hour marker eye with stopwatch function (eyes at 6-9-12). 3-Eye chronograph with date: Analog + second totalizer eye, minute totalizer eye, and 24 hour marker eye with stopwatch function + date (eyes at 6-9-12). 3-Eye chronograph with date and alarm: Analog + minute totalizer eye, and 24 hour marker eye with stopwatch function + date + alarm (eyes at 6-9-12).
CHRONOGRAPH ALARM
A watch that has both stopwatch and alarm functions
COMPASS DIRECTIONAL RING
A rotating ring that can be used to determine your direction by using the position of the sun and the time of day
COUNTDOWN TIMER
Function that tells how much of a preset period of time has elapsed
CROWN
The “knob” used to set the time and/or the date
CRYSTAL
The clear lens that covers the “face” of the watch; it is often made of plastic, glass or mineral glass (a harder glass composite that is resistant to scratching and breaking)
DEPLOYMENT BUCKLE
A three part folding closure mechanism
DIAL
The “face” of the watch
DIGITAL
The screen showing time and other functions in numerical digits
DIVER’S WATCH
A watch that is water resistant to 200 meters; it should have a one way rotating bezel and a screw down crown and case back
DUAL TIME
Measures current local time as well as another time zone; additional time zone is displayed by a twin dial, extra hand or sub-dial
DUST RESISTANT
A watch that is engineered and assembled to minimize dust particle penetration; this is crucial to it’s efficient functioning; to maintain dust resistance, do not leave the crown disengaged from the case for extended periods of time
ELAPSED TIME RING
If your watch is equipped with a rotatable outer dial with numbers and indicators, this Elapsed Time Ring may be used to indicate the length of time remaining for an activity or the starting time of an activity. TIME REMAINING- set the outer ring so that the triangle is pointing to the time the activity is to end. STARTING TIME – set the triangle on the time the activity is to begin.
GMT (GREENWICH MEAN TIME)
(Also known as Zulu time) is set to the international clock in Greenwich, England and is used by pilots worldwide; 2nd time zone may read from a hand making a full rotation in a 24 hour ring indicating AM or PM
HYPOALERGENIC
Although Nautica watches have stainless steel case backs and bracelets, they are not hypoallergenic.
INTERNATIONAL / MILITARY TIME
Hours numbered to 24 (01:00 to 24:00). As seen on digital read-outs or sub-dials.
IP (ION PLATING)
A process that fuses the color into the metal resulting in superior bonding and producing a hard, durable finish
LUMINOUS
When a self-illuminating material is used on watch hands or markers causing them to glow in the dark
MICRON
Measurement (one millionth of a meter) used to gauge the thickness of metal plating
MILITARY / 24 HOUR TIME
When time is measured in 24 hours segments; usually shown on sub-dials
MINI-SWEEP
A sub-dial that measures seconds
MOON WATCH (AM/PM)
Rotating moon display showing the sun (AM) and the moon (PM)
MOTHER OF PEARL
Iridescent milky interior of oyster shells that is sliced thin and used on watch dials
MOVEMENT
The inner mechanism of a watch that enables it to measure time; a quartz movement measures the vibrations in a piece of quartz, is highly accurate and is powered by a battery
MULTI-FUNCTION
Any watch with functions in addition to normal time – 3-Eye multi-function: Analog + (day + date + 24 hour/military time eyes at 3-6-9).
RATCHET BEZEL
A rotating ring around the dial to measure periods of elapsed time up to 60 minutes
RESIN
A synthetic material used in watch straps that is lightweight, durable and pliable
RETROGRADE
A movement utilizing a pointer hand on a sub-dial which moves in an arc and springs back when it’s cycle is completed
ROSE GOLD
When a small amount of copper is added to the metal alloy creating a pink gold color
SCREW DOWN CROWN
A crown which screws close to the case and ensures superior water resistance
SHOCK RESISTANCE
As defined by the Federal Trade Commission regulation, a watch’s ability to withstand an impact equal to that of being dropped onto a wood surface from a height of 3 feet
SLIDE RULE
A rotating bezel that is printed with a logarithmic scale that can be used to do mathematical calculations or navigational computations
SPLASH RESISTANT
Basic water resistant construction; cannot be reliable and is not suitable for showering or swimming
SQUARE
Any style with a square or rectangular case
STAINLESS STEEL
An extremely durable metal alloy that is virtually immune to rust, discoloration and corrosion; since it does not contain nickel, it is hypoallergenic
STEM
The shaft that connects the crown to the movement
SWAROVSKI®
Austrian manufacturer of quality faceted crystals
TACHYMETER
Feature used to measure a rate of speed over a fixed distance in miles per hour (MPH), nautical miles per hour (KNOTS) or kilometers per hour (KPH); the sweep second hand and the scale reflector ring or bezel are used
TITANIUM
A silvery-gray metal that is much stronger but much lighter than stainless steel, hypoallergenic, able to withstand extreme temperatures and resistant to salt water corrosion
WATERPROOF
The Federal Trade Commission forbids the use of this term as it relates to watches since no watch is truly 100% waterproof
WATER RESISTANT
Describes the level of protection a watch has from water damage; watches will withstand water pressure up to their respective ratings as long as the crystal, crown, case, push buttons and gaskets remain intact
